About Shanille Martin

Shanille Martin is a creative writer based in New York. She was born in Jamaica but moved to the states just a few days after her eighth birthday. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She attended Purchase College for her BA in Creative Writing, with minors in Literature and Psychology. It was at Purchase that Shanille discovered her voice and identity as a black writer, falling in love with the literature of Toni Morrison.

She is published in Newsweek, Gandy Dancer, Italics Mine, Submissions Magazine, and various other publications. She is a mentee alum of Girl Write Now but now works in the program as a mentor to a young up-and-coming writer. She's worked as an assistant writing instructor and camp counselor for Writopia Lab.

Shanille has also edited with Radish Fiction as a contract editor for a few of their episodes.

She is Co-founder and Publicity Manager at Brown Sugar Literary Magazine, a magazine designated to showcasing the works of women of color. The magazine began during the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, with the hopes of bringing something light out of all the darkness in the world.
